What a peptide bioregulator is

Very short peptides, two to four residues, studied as tissue-specific regulatory sequences.

Short enough that the sequence is the whole molecule

The peptides in this group are two to four amino acids long. At that length there is no secondary structure to speak of — no helix, no sheet, nothing folded — so the molecule is fully described by its sequence and its termini. Epithalon is four residues, alanyl-glutamyl-aspartyl-glycine; Pinealon and the others in the group are of comparable length.

That brevity has a practical consequence for analysis. A tetrapeptide is small enough that mass spectrometry resolves its identity unambiguously, and short enough that there are few plausible synthesis-related impurities to separate from it. The chromatograms are correspondingly simple.

Where the classification comes from

"Bioregulator" is a class name drawn from the Russian-language literature in which these sequences were first characterised and catalogued, where they are described as tissue-specific regulatory peptides. The term is a label for a research lineage and a length class, and it is used here for that reason — it is the word the published work uses, so it is the word that makes the literature findable.

It is not a claim about activity, and this site does not make one. What these sequences have been studied in relation to is a question for the primary literature, not for a supplier's catalogue page.

Also spelled Epitalon, and other naming variants

Several compounds in this group carry more than one accepted spelling, a legacy of transliteration from the original publications. Epithalon is also written Epitalon, and is catalogued in some sources by its sequence, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. Those variants are registered as alternate names on the product so a search for any of them resolves correctly.

Every lot is released against the same specification as the rest of the catalogue and ships with its own certificate of analysis.

Sold-out listings stay published rather than being removed, so their specifications, catalogue numbers and certificates remain readable while the compound is out of stock. For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
